Documenta #15 in The Hague goes back to the basics in Art

23rd September.

As is well known, the event started with publicity and political thunder because a visitor/blogger managed to find a sensitive historical symbol in the many expressions on the Documenta that immediately makes people’s hair stand on end and opens old wounds. It almost seemed like a PR stunt to generate the necessary attention around the event, but in the aftermath even the director of the Documenta has decided to resign. I avoided reporting on those scandals as much as possible because it was immediately clear that the discussions only have a polarizing effect and that the commotion mainly illustrates the dynamics of media violence. We are now familiar with this mechanism, because in recent years almost every social debate has been contaminated by it. It is a sad form of public market forces.
