Amare, The Hague’s main concert hall complex is hosting a spectacular installation – the monumental artwork Poppy by the internationally renowned artist Zoro Feigl. This impressive work, that looks like a gigantic, dancing poppy, can be admired in the entrance hall of Amare until 31st July. Poppy is freely accessible to all visitors. Visual art is often shown in Amare as part of Open Amare, the freely accessible programming in public space.
The artwork represents a poppy flower, which only shows itself when the work starts moving. This compelling artwork, which is part of Feigl’s famous Flower series, has previously been on display at Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam, Verbeke Foundation in Belgium and De Elektriciteitsfabriek in The Hague. Different versions of the work have hung in places such as FILE Sao Paulo in Brazil and the Busan Biennale in Korea.
Zoro Feigl (1983, Amsterdam) is an internationally renowned artist whose work has been exhibited in museums and institutions around the world, including the Mori Art Museum Tokyo, SPACE Pittsburgh USA and the National Art Museum of China.
Artist Zoro Feigl said, “Poppy was created by seeing a sail flapping in the wind. After various experiments, the artwork became increasingly larger. The work invites you to stand still for a moment and look up. Amare is a place where people take the time to observe things. This work is very disarming in its simplicity and therefore appeals to many different people.”
Amare, the international stage for music and dance in The Hague, strives to be an accessible and inspiring place for everyone. In addition to a varied range of concerts and performances, Amare also offers a wide range of freely accessible activities in the public space. Under the name Open Amare, visitors can enjoy dance workshops, lunch-time concerts and exhibitions. The public space is by and for the city and forms a stage for the creative energy of the entire city of The Hague. Amare provides ample space for programming and installations, but also literally space to stay and develop your own initiatives. The installation of Poppy emphasises the growing focus on installations within Open Amare
Leontien Wiering, director of Amare said, “Zoro Feigl’s installation inspires us because it changes the space and creates an experience for the visitor. That is what Amare stands for: stimulating the senses and broadening the view. ‘Poppy’ is a perfect embodiment of this vision. We are proud to present this work by Zoro Feigl to our audience. ”
The exhibition of Poppy was made possible by Stichting Podium van de Stad. The foundation contributes to the special projects and (international) programming of Stichting Amare.
