Launched in June 2017, we provide previews, reviews and information, in English, for theatres, art exhibitions, concerts, opera etc, concentrating on cities in south west Netherlands. We cover Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and everything in between and nearby – an area known as Randstad. Each venue, museum or gallery has its own page with information and a link to its website. EXTRACURRICULAR

MARIANNE VON WEREFKIN Pioneer of Expressionism at De Fundatie in Zwolle

The exhibition of Marianne von Werefkin at De Fundatie in Zwolle starts with an intimate painting of Vera Repin knitting a child’s sock. It confirms that Ilja Repin was right in comparing her treatment of chiaroscuro to that of Rembrandt! However, the self-portrait she makes a decade later shows that she is moving away from this academic style of painting more towards impressionism.

Jackie Mulder’s work always begins with a self-made photograph or a complex stratification of photos. She then transfers the images onto various surfaces, applying labour-intensive manual techniques. These images are deconstructed and reconstructed through the use of beeswax, embroidery and drawing.
