AFTER HOURS – Friday night at Museum Beelden aan Zee

Lucie Nezri and Nirantar Yakthumba

It’s always a pleasure to visit Beelden aan Zee, the sculpture museum which is almost on the beach at Scheveningen, The Hague’s seaside resort, and last night it launched its exciting new initiative After Hours. Similar to the events staged at Kunsthal in Rotterdam, the part party, part vernissage will take place on the first Friday of each month from 18.00 to 22.00.

During After Hours you can wander around the museum and take in the sea view from its wonderful terrace and see up-and-coming talent from The Hague. During the evening you will be able to enjoy sound art, theatre, food-scapes, modern dance, R&B, light art and much more! DJs will be playing records in the museum café and you can take part in flash tours of the museum and workshops in the museum’s unique Plaster Library.

After Hours kicked off last night in a big way with LOOS, an innovative performers’ lab that uses both conventional instruments and state-of-the-art technology. With sound art as a starting point, Peter van Bergen put together a programme in which established makers, young talent and pioneers from the past come together. With performances by Gilius van Bergeijk and Baidar Al-Basri, among others, installations by Johan van Kreij and Emi Martin, a film by Isabella and Sarah Wentink, and finally a crossover with hip-hop: “QUARTET II invites PINK OCULUS”. And all this between the sculptures by Sarah Lucas, Steve McQueen and Ai Weiwei, among others which are on show in the current exhibition If not now, when?
