They were forced to make this difficult decision because it has become apparent it will not be possible to host an NN North Sea Jazz which holds up to the usual high standard as soon as this July. Although many hopeful developments are taking place, such as vaccinations and quick testing, too many uncertainties remain. The realisation of a strong international program with American artists, for instance, proves too big a challenge at this time. In order to provide clarity they have decided to take measures now.
“We greatly regret having to take his decision”, states festival director Jan Willem Luyken. “Going without NN North Sea Jazz two years in a row is a bitter pill to swallow for everybody: visitors, artists, suppliers, crew, partners, as well as the organization itself. But it is the only right one. We’ve kept our hopes up for a long time and considered several alternative scenarios, among which an autumn edition. During this process we even involved our visitors; in a survey we asked them which scenario they preferred if the festival couldn’t be held this July. An overwhelming majority expressed their preference to postpone until 2022. So we are placing full bets on that now. We would like to thank everybody who has supported us by keeping last year’s tickets and are confident we will be able to greet them on July 8, 9 and 10, 2022, in a renewed Rotterdam Ahoy, at a festival that will be as smashing and exciting as ever.”
