OperaZuid is one of the two “striking” winners of the Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Award 2022 which was awarded at the Amare in The Hague on 15th October. The opera company wins the prize for composition commissions to the young composers Lucas Wiegerink and Jan-Peter de Graaff. OperaZuid shares the prize with the Oranjewoud Festival. The jury speaks of “two rock-solid examples of Fair Practice”. “They practice Fair Practice as a shared practice, as something you do together with others. With these winners, we see that Fair Practice can be carried much further if you put your shoulders to the wheel,” said Geneco President Felix Rottenberg.
Opera South and Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Award 2022
OperaZuid is aware of its place in the cultural field and its responsibility for a future – proof professional practice and fair chain . OperaZuid’s programming focuses on providing new assignments and commitments, both for artists and for specialized support staff (stage technicians, stage managers, etc.), so also for payment and financial security – even in times of the pandemic. Fair practice and, in particular, key values such as solidarity, sustainability and transparency remain leading.
OperaZuid has commissioned compositions from Lucas Wiegerink, whose family opera Het Lijflied is currently touring the country until January 8, 2023, and a new opera by Jan-Peter de Graaff. “The appreciation and acknowledgment of the entire process, the development in good faith and the manner of consultation are guaranteed at Opera Zuid in such a warm and cordial way that for me that is the most important reason why I have nominated the company. and why I can now say that it is a very justified winner!”, says Jan-Peter de Graaff.
Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Award 2022
With the presentation of the Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Award, Nieuw Geneco focuses attention on fair practice, fee guidelines and good commissioning in new music. Composers submitted a motivated nomination, based on their own experiences with a given composition assignment, and the jury compiled a shortlist from this. Criteria for this included fair remuneration for assignments, clear agreements, free space for composers, sustainable development of the audience, repertoire and playing opportunities and a special impact on Dutch musical life.
The Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Award was previously presented to Orgelpark, Fie Schouten (Bass clarinet festival), Orkest De Ereprijs and Marcia (Zembla Music/Steun de composer).
