Finalists announced for the 2023 Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition

RIDCC (Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition) is the only annual dance event for choreographic talent in which a duet competition is central. From over 400 registrations, 16 choreographers have been selected for the fifth anniversary edition! Among the participants we count 13 nationalities. On 22nd, 23rd and 24th June the duets will be performed in Theater Rotterdam. The main prize – made possible by Stichting Droom en Daad and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam – consists of a production budget with a value of €100,000; the largest and most unique dance prize in the world!

Out of 431 registrations, the pre-jury has selected the following 16 participants for the competition: Lia Claudia Latinin (IT) & Giovanni Leonarduzzi (IT), Tamir Golan (IL), Yi-En Chen (TW), Or Marin (IL), Charlia Skuy (CA), Nadine Gerspacher (DE) & Arias Fernandez (ES), Tang Chenglong (CN), Borna Babić (HR) & Eliana Stragapede (IT), Albert Hernández-Lledo (ES), Kang Yang (CN) & Sijun Huang (CN), Maria Chiara de’ Nobili (IT) & Alexander Miller (DE), Xiaoyun Fan (CN), Chetan Solanki (IN) Urvil Shah (IN), Chen Li (CN) & Feiyang Shi (CN), Rebecca Laufer (US/IL) & Mats van Rossum (NL), Isaiah Wilson (LU) & Sarah Baltzinger (FR).

Unique this year
The 16 selected, high-quality duets show various styles, from modern to krumping. Special this year is that for the first time a choreographer from India will participate in the competition. Also a contemporary flamenco duet will be presented on stage, a style that has never made it to the top 16 before. Furthermore, this edition has an exceptionally high number of participants from Asia, and one of the selected choreographers is also a dancer with RIDCC’s partner Nederlands Dans Theater.

Maya Roest and Mischa van Leeuwen, founders and artistic directors of RIDCC, about the fifth anniversary edition: “Over ten years ago we participated in the Internationales Solo Tanz Theater Festival Stuttgart competition with a solo. We won the second prize for choreography, which was of course a great experience, but above all it made us realize how valuable a competition can be for young makers. We decided to take matters into our own hands and that meant the start of RIDCC. Now, five years later, RIDCC has established itself as the largest duet competition in the world! We see that in these five years RIDCC continues to expand. What strikes us is that RIDCC has really gained a foothold in Asia this year. This has had a positive influence on registrations and the exceptionally large number of selected Asian participants who will be flying to Rotterdam. In the coming years, RIDCC is committed to being visible in all parts of the world. This upcoming edition RIDCC again offers much more than a competition with great prizes. A total experience awaits the 16 chosen choreographers, with master classes, workshops and network meetings. We can’t wait for June!”

3 festive evenings in Theater Rotterdam
During the semi-finals on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 June, the 16 duets will be performed in Theater Rotterdam. An internationally renowned jury will determine which choreographers will proceed to the grand finale on Saturday 24 June, where the winner of the XL Production Award will be announced afterwards. RIDCC’s partners, including Club Guy & Roni, MiR Dance Company and the Dutch National Ballet, choose the winners of the Partner Awards from all 16 participants and the audience finally decides which talented choreographer gets granted the Audience Award.

RIDCC also invites Polish choreographer Maciej Kuźmiński (former contestant 2021) to bring his impressive, live installation transience to the Netherlands.
