Fate strikes mercilessly hard in Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino. A family conflict with a fatal ending arises against the backdrop of war.
The tragic heroine of La forza del destino already faces an impossible feat in the first act: the choice between her true love Don Alvaro and the memory of her father, who was accidentally killed by Alvaro.
The timeline of the story is not linear, which makes the work difficult to stage. Forza has had a big influence as the precursor of patchwork drama, and has been very important in the development of Russian opera, in particular.
Conducted by Michele Mariotti who studied at the Conservatorio Rossini in Pesaro. In 2005, the Italian conductor made his opera debut with Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, in Salerno. His conducting of Simon Boccanegra with the Teatro Comunale di Bologna in 2007 was such a success that he was immediately appointed a regular conductor with the theatre, becoming principal conductor in 2014. Mariotti has conducted with major opera houses and festivals, including ROH Covent Garden, The Met New York, Teatro alla Scala, Opéra national de Paris and the Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro. Recently, he has conducted Les Huguenots (Deutsche Oper Berlin), Werther (Teatro Comunale di Bologna), Semiramide (Bayerische Staatsoper) and I due Foscari (Teatro alla Scala and Salzburger Festspiele). Future productions include: Lucia di Lammermoor (ROH Covent Garden), La bohème (Teatro Comunale di Bologna), La donna del lago (Opéra Royal de Wallonie) and L’italiana in Algeri (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées).
