MIND OVER MATTER at Bruno Gallery in Amsterdam

Bruno Gallery in Amsterdam new show is of two new local artists, Mirrin de Greef and Erwin van Hoof in their newest themed exhibition, Mind Over Matter. This intriguing exhibition focuses on how physical materials bridge the gap between the artist’s concept and their final physical work ultimately evoking a dialogue between the creative intent and the present reality manifested.

Simona Zanelli, director of Bruno Gallery explains that she wanted to exhibit “two different artists that have in common a sense of mindfulness and who also create a kind of feeling of enjoyment the moment the artwork is created.” She fundamentally wants to “explore, with these artists, the power of creativity and matter of the mind” which is for example quite recognizable in Van Hoof’s work.

Berlin-based, Dutch sculptor, van Hoof, creates three-dimensional graphic artworks that explore the interplay and dialogue between light and shadow. Using cardboard, acrylic and wood Van Hoof creates an intriguing piece of work: depending on which angle you look at the artwork and at what time of day the “the light changes the composition”, he explains.

Van Hoof further elaborates that light in The Netherlands is scarce which was one of the factors that inspired him to explore the contrasts between light and dark. In the near future he hopes to display his artwork under varying lighting conditions to evoke other impressions from the viewer. Only producing these series of sculptures in the last two years Van Hoof successfully communicates how materials can alter the way we perceive an artwork and how the tactility of objects may further shape our emotions.

Almere based, Dutch artist, Mirrin de Greeff approaches her work very differently. Using felting she creates organic structures, most particularly rocks, which gives an appreciation to nature and calamity. Composed of natural, tranquil gray we forget that her productions are composed of individually loose and delicate natural fibers. De Greeff mentions that she feels good when creating and hopes that people will also feel the same when looking at her work.

The artworks by De Greef and Van Hoof initiate discussions into ways of perceiving tangible materials and how it can influence our lasting impression. The exhibition illustrates the artist’s creative intent and how that holds a profound influence over matter. The works can be seen until 30th April. If you happen to be passing through Amsterdam then this is a suggested visit.  Anja Herrmann   11th April 2024
